Recreation
Tennis Nets
A resident reported the Tennis Nets had seen better days and would need replacing soon. Kelly has investigated costs, and each net is currently £129.99. We will need two, but we may be able to get a discount. Recreation WG discussed the options and, as income from the Tennis is up, they suggest purchasing two Nets, with as much discount as possible and putting these in place in March 2025, with the best of the old nets set aside as a reserve. The resident in question has been contacted and is happy with this outcome.
Dog poo
Sorry! An abundance of Dog poo has, once again been raised. Speaking to Phil we believe we have a sufficient number of Dog Poo Bins, however Phil has taken a number of warning stickers and will put them up where possible.
Converting one Tennis Court into a Padel Court
The office has been contacted regarding this, but there was little detail. Recreation WG have suggested the enquirer is passed details of the Melton Park Sports and Social Club, but that the matter was re-considered by Full Council, if a firmer business case was presented in the future.
Pavilion Management
The following items were highlighted by the Office to the Recreation WG:
- Rubbish Bins Full – These are being used by hirers of the Pavilion, when they are instructed to take litter home with them. It has been suggested that black bin bags are provided, and better signage is erected.
- Promotion – Usage has fallen recently, and income is down. The Office will try to promote the use of the Pavilion with local groups (School, WI, etc.) for little or no cost. If this is unsuccessful, they will look to purchase a Banner and take out paid advertising space in local magazines/newsletters.
- Hire Fees Revision – Research has shown that current fees are roughly in line with other similar buildings. However, sessions are complicated by hirers being permitted to book as little as two hours and with usage down it was felt best not to revise the current structure at present.
Repairs to Play Equipment at:
Melton Road Play Park
A meeting has been held with Phil and Louis Clarke from East Suffolk Services Ltd to discuss urgent work to the Play equipment on the Melton Road Park. After discussion and liaison with the Recreation Working Group, a decision was taken to carryout urgent repairs. The total cost will be in the region of £1,000. As there is no ‘maintenance’ pot in the budget, reserves will need to be used. Councillors are asked to authorise this expenditure.

Work to Trees in Saxon Way
The office continues to be asked by residents if trees behind Saxon Way can be taken down, due to them blocking out light from gardens. The Maintenance and Asst Clerk have viewed one example but there is no sign of the tree being dead, dying or diseased. Recreation WG have suggested referring the residents to the MPC tree policy
Councillors are asked to:
- Note and comment on this report
- Agree purchase of two Tennis Nets (approx.. £260.00)
- Agree to emergency repair costs for Play Equipment at Melton Road Play Park
