Reports from Outside Bodies
Burness Parish Room Management Committee – Cllr Gradwell – nothing to report
Melton Trust – Cllr Martin – We have received a rush of applications mainly for grants to cover new school uniforms. This is because Melton Primary are changing their basic uniform to standard, supermarket clothes with only the sweatshirt/cardigan needing to be bought specifically, due to having the school logo on. I believe the school suggested that families who needed help should contact the Trust which is what we are there for. So far, we have been able to help all the families who have made an application.
Melton Primary School – Nothing to report
Melton Messenger – Cllr Brown – Efforts to maintain and expand the advertising stream have been successful and the financial position is improving.
Suffolk Association of Local Councils (SALC) – Cllr Gradwell – nothing to report
Suffolk Disability Forum – Cllr Darby – nothing to report
Melton, Woodbridge and Deben Peninsula Community Partnership – Cllr Packard – Nothing to report
Woodbridge and Melton Society – Cllr Bann – Key points to note from their Committee meeting held on 7th August.
The Society’s Chair has met with representatives of The Sutton Hoo Ship Company, the Woodbridge Riverside Trust and Woodbridge Town Council concerning the ongoing dispute between the Trust and the Company about the terms for using the Longshed. The Committee concluded that the dispute, if not resolved, could have the consequence of the ship having to be finished and maintained elsewhere. This would seriously damage a major opportunity for the local area in its continuing development as a site of national and international interest in Anglo-Saxon history and archaeology.
Active Travel Woodbridge – the County Council consultation response report was discussed. The Society will input to the proposals for the town centre in the autumn consultation. Concern was expressed that a great deal of the allocated funding had been wasted on the original proposals and consultation.
The Society’s Planning Group reviews local planning applications. They noted that many applications were about trees. The chair of the group stated that the Town Council were concerned to preserve trees where possible. Cllr Bann said that Melton PC took TPO applications and planning applications that impacted trees very seriously and had a good working relationship with the East Suffolk Council Tree Officer. The chair of the W&MS Planning Group recommended that they meet with the Tree Officer as this might assist in the Society’s evaluation of applications.
The Sir Archibald Garrod Blue Plaque ceremony in Melton was a great success and well publicised. A plaque on the Tide Mill for Jean Gardner a benefactor and advocate for the Mill’s restoration is being organised and funded by the Tide Mill Trust. W&MS will check the wording of the plaque before installation. No other plaques are under active consideration.
Deben Estuary Partnership – Cllr Packard – Next Deben estuary partnership is on 19th September which Cllr Packard will be attending.
