Bike Rack at Melton Playing Field
There is no provision for cyclists to lock up their bikes securely at the playing field. Melton Parish Council’s cycling advocate has suggested the following:
Type
The rack must support the bike frame, so the frame can be locked to it. It must not be type that grip the front wheel. Most of these do not cater for narrow wheels and can damage narrower wheels and the frame cannot be locked to them. This can invalidate insurance should a bike be stolen.
Cost
Indicative costs are around £150 for two racks and installation. The racks can be galvanised silver or powder coated in green.
Location
The bike racks need to be accessible ie. not in a place where cars will park so close to them that a bike cannot be locked to them. A hatched area will not work as it will be ignored. Ideally they should be on hardstanding to avoid the area becoming a mudbath in wet weather. The Maintenance Officer and Asst Clerk have identified two possible locations near the car park (next to the noticeboard or near the bin/playing field sign) and a concrete plinth could be erected as the base. It was also noted that when the new Pavilion is constructed, consideration should be made to installing a bike rack there too.
At the Recreation Committee meeting on the 26th May 2021 Members agreed that two bike racks should be purchased initially.
Councillors are asked to:
- Note and comment on this report
- Agree to the purchase of these bike racks and if they wish to be galvanised or powder coated. The cost can be attributed to CIL.
